Homogenizers, sterilizers, pasteurizers, evaporators and autoclaves are the units that receive pressure measuring devices. Various containers and tanks, including those designed for blending, buffering, fermentation, BBT and milk tanks typically need level controlling transmitters.

DIN 11851 hygienic union is widely used throughout Europe, most often in beverages production lines. From the point of view of hygiene, they are not perfect: some areas of such unions are subject to contamination. A transmitter with DIN 11851 port cannot be mounted flush with the process, there are always "dead" spots present. The American Clamp standard union is used both in food and pharmaceutical industries. Clamp is good when connecting pipes to tanks. This type of union ensures the seals receive the load uniformly, which is a plus. The design is less bulky than that of DIN 11851, but mounting is more complicated.

Varivent® (built-in housing) connection is used to install instruments and devices into pipes. It allows flush mounting and ensures there are no dead spots,  bringing the device right into the flow. The features of its design eliminate pressure loss in the housing. It is very easy to clean. A special clamp secures it in place.  Flanged connection is another type of connection used in the food industry. There are four and more bolts to this connection, which makes it very reliable. However, flanged connection is hard to mount, and the seal can suffer nonuniform load when the bolts are tightened unevenly.

 

Diaphragm materials

Transmitters designed for aggressive media receive diaphragms resistant to acids and alkalis: steel 1.4435, Hastelloy®, Tantalum, Monel, 99.9% ceramics.

Other design features

The cavity between the diaphragm and the sensor in a food-grade pressure transmitter is filled with special edible oil. Thus, if the diaphragm is accidentally damaged, the food only receives safe edible oil from the transmitter. Food-grade pressure transmitters designed for cooled media (beer, milk, etc.) have a special dielectric gel as a fill liquid; this gel fills the electronic unit case and prevents condensation inside the transmitter.
